Ueno

Ueno district is a good place to get a feel for old Tokyo called “Shitamachi.”  Ueno is also famous for Park, Museum, and Market.  This district is excellent place to feel heart of Japanese people.

Ueno Park (上野公園)

Ueno Park is the biggest public park in Tokyo, and its located just next to JR Ueno St. This park were in used of Kan’eiji Temple which closely associated with the Tokugawa Shogun during Edo Period. This park also famous for Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing) in early to mid April.

Kan’eiji Temple (寛永寺)

Kan’eiji Temple was one of the biggest and wealthiest temples in Tokyo during Edo Period.  This temple was destroyed furring the Boshin War and World War II, and the present one is just a reconstructioned.

Kiyomizu Kannon Temple (清水観音堂)

Kiyomizu Kannon Temple is part of Kan’eiji Temple that originally built in 1631.  The wooden Balcony which extending from the hillside, was inspired by Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto.  This Temple is particularly famous for women who is hoping to have children.

Ueno Toshogu Shrine (上野東照宮)

Ueno Toshogu Shrine was built in 1616, and it  used to be incorporated into Kan’eiji Temple until 1868.Currently under major renovation, it to be completed in 2013 (Scheduled).

Bentendo (弁天堂)

Bentendo is dedicated to Benten, the goddess of “Good Future” especially for wealth, music and knowledge. The temple is an octagonal that located on island in Shinobazu Pond.

Tokyo National Museum

Tokyo National Museum is the biggest and oldest museum in Japan.  This museum has five buildings and each building is a separate museum itself.  This museum has the largest collection of National Treasures in this country.

National Museum of nature and Science

This museum covers variety of study program such as science, natural history (with hands-on activity), and robotics experiments. 360 degree virtual theater and variety collection of mounted animals are relocated from the Aichi Expo.

Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum

Closed : under renovations until April 2012.

National Museum of Western Art

This Museum is focusing on Western Art, and most of collections are by European Artists. This museum also has special exhibition (Additional charge for admission) on loan from the other museums.

Shitamachi Museum

Shitamachi Museum re-built life in Edo’s Shitamachi (Old local town), and you could learn how Tokyo’s people lived from Meiji to Showa periods.

Ueno Zoo

Ueno Zoo is oldest zoo in Japan which opened in 1882. The most popular residents are Giant Panda Bears, which is the symbol of relationship between Japan and China.  After Ling Ling’s (Giant Panda Bears name) death in 2008, Ueno Zoo had temporarily No panda bears. However, new Giant Panda Bears has moved here spring of 2011.
