Tohoku is a district in northeast Japan. Tohoku means “northeast” in Japanese. Snow falls a lot in winter. Many poeple enjoy winter sports like ski and snowboard.
In 11th of March 2011, terrible earthquake occured in this district. Japan and many people are still trying to recover from damages.
Prefectures in Tohoku district
- Akita : Japan Sea and a famous breed of dog. Well known for Akita Kanto-Matsuri festival.
- Aomori : The northernmost part in Tohoku. Nebuta-matsuri festival is worth viewing!

- Miyagi : Sendai Tanabata matsuri is famous and beautiful!
- Yamagata — mountains and a stretch of Japan Sea coast

- Hiraizumi — historical site with several large temples
- Hirosaki — the cultural capital of the North
- Miyako — while the town itself is nothing spectacular, it’s near the beautiful Jodogahama beach
- Morioka — capital of Iwate with beautiful rivers
- Sendai — capital of Miyagi and the largest city in Tohoku. It enjoys the epithet Mori no Miyako, “The Forest City”, due to its dense tree lined thoroughfares and forested public areas.
